Jikkyou J.League Perfect Striker is one of those N64 soccer games that flew under the radar outside Japan, which is a shame because it’s way more polished than you’d expect. Right off the bat, you’ve got all the real J.League teams and players—no fake names or weird placeholder kits. The controls feel tight, almost like a lighter version of ISS 64, and the animations are surprisingly smooth for an early N64 sports title.
What I love is how quick matches feel. None of that sluggish midfield slog—you’re passing, sprinting down the wing, and firing shots in no time. The AI actually puts up a decent fight too, especially on higher difficulties. Graphics-wise, it’s no FIFA 98, but the player models have this chunky charm, and the stadium crowds pop with color.
If you’re into retro soccer games and want something different from the usual FIFA or ISS fare, this one’s a solid pick. Just don’t expect English menus unless you’re cool with trial-and-error button mashing.
