Jet Force Gemini on N64 is one of those weird, ambitious games that throws a ton of ideas at you—third-person shooting, platforming, even some light Metroidvania-style backtracking once you unlock new abilities. You start off blasting bugs as Juno (the guy with the satisfyingly chunky rifle), but soon get to swap between three characters, each with their own movement quirks. Vela’s faster but weaker, Lupus can hover… you get the idea.
The levels are these sprawling alien landscapes with hidden tribal bears to rescue (yeah, bears—just go with it), and the controls take some getting used to if you’re spoiled by modern twin-stick aiming. But there’s something about the janky charm of it—the way explosions send enemies ragdolling, the weirdly catchy tribal-meets-techno soundtrack. Also, the co-op mode is hilariously unbalanced in the best way—one player gets stuck as a tiny floating robot while the other does all the actual shooting.
It’s not perfect, but it’s got more personality than most shooters from that era. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand.
