Hana No Star Kaidou is one of those weird, charming NES platformers that makes you go, "Wait, how does this even work?" at first. You control two musicians—a guy and a girl—at the same time, which sounds chaotic but actually clicks after a few jumps. They move in sync unless you hit the button to split them up temporarily, and figuring out when to do that is half the fun.
The levels are bright and simple, with these little musical notes scattered around like collectibles (because, you know, musicians). The controls are a little stiff—it is 1987—but there’s something oddly satisfying about nailing a tricky jump with both characters in perfect harmony. Also, the soundtrack’s got that classic NES chiptune energy, which fits since the heroes are literally holding guitars.
It’s short, it’s quirky, and yeah, it’s definitely Japanese—the title screen alone makes that clear. Worth a look if you’re into obscure platformers with a gimmick.
