Ganbare Goemon - Mononoke Sugoroku is one of those weird, charming N64 games that never left Japan but totally should have. It’s like if Mario Party had a baby with a JRPG—you roll dice to move around this colorful board, but instead of just minigames, you’re fighting yokai, collecting power-ups, and pulling off Goemon’s classic pipe attacks. The art style’s all big-headed characters and exaggerated animations, which somehow makes getting ambushed by a tengu feel fun instead of frustrating.
At first, I thought it’d be pure luck, but there’s actually some sneaky strategy—like hoarding coins to buy better gear or timing when you challenge other players. The multiplayer’s chaotic in the best way, especially when someone lands on a cursed space and suddenly their character’s tiny for three turns. It’s not the deepest game in the Goemon series, but it’s got that weird, playful energy the N64 did so well.
