Feng Shen Ying Jie Chuan is one of those Genesis deep cuts that feels like stumbling into a forgotten myth. You start off as this warrior caught up in a divine war between gods and demons—classic Chinese folklore stuff, but with that crunchy 16-bit charm. The sprites are surprisingly detailed for the era, especially the boss designs—some of these deities look like they walked straight out of an old temple painting.
Gameplay’s a mix of side-scrolling slashing and weirdly strategic magic choices. I remember getting wrecked by the first boss until I realized certain spells actually stagger him. No hand-holding here—just trial, error, and a lot of button mashing until you figure out the rhythm. The music’s all tinny synths trying to sound like guzheng strings, which somehow works when you’re fighting a three-headed dragon at 2 AM.
It’s janky in that very 90s way, but there’s something about the ambition of it—like they tried to cram an entire epic into 4 megabits. If you’re into obscure action-RPG hybrids, this one’s got personality to spare.
