I first played Eltale Monsters on the Nintendo 64 back in 1998. It was published by Imagineer, and it fit right in with the kind of exploratory action games the system had at the time. You don't hear about it as much as the big franchises, but it had its own quiet spot on the shelf.

You control a young hero exploring a world divided into distinct screen by screen areas. Your main goal is to venture through dungeons, fighting monsters with a sword and occasionally a bow to collect pieces of a powerful artifact. The combat is straightforward, focusing on timing your slashes and dodging enemy attacks, while the exploration requires you to methodically clear each screen of enemies to progress. The game moves at a deliberate pace, and some of the later dungeon puzzles can be quite challenging. It feels like a methodical, almost meditative quest where each cleared room is a small victory.
