About Decapattack
DecapAttack came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, published by Vic Tokai. It was part of that wave of early 90s action platformers that tried to stand out with a particular gimmick, and this one certainly had one. You control a disembodied, floating head named Chuck D. Head, a horror host whose body was stolen by an evil magician. The goal is straightforward: navigate through a series of themed stages, defeat the bosses, and get your body back.
You guide Chuck through side scrolling levels, jumping on platforms and attacking enemies by launching your own head at them. Your main attack is a headbutt; you can charge it up for a more powerful shot, but you're left vulnerable while your head is detached. The key is managing this risk, as you can't move your body while your head is in flight. You explore each stage screen by screen, looking for keys to unlock doors and hunting for power ups that grant temporary abilities, like a fireball attack. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, demanding precise jumps and quick reactions to enemy patterns. It feels like a strange, slightly janky challenge from a time when developers were willing to try almost anything.
