Challenger on the NES is one of those weird, ambitious little games that tried to do way too much—and somehow it kinda works? It started as a port of Stop the Express (a ZX Spectrum game), but they tacked on two extra levels, turning it into this bizarre mashup of side-scrolling platforming, top-down shooting, and static-screen action. You play as an Indiana Jones knockoff (seriously, they didn’t even try to hide it) chasing some villain named Don Waldorado through 100 screens of Pleasio Land.
The train level from the original game is still there—you’re jumping between cars, dodging obstacles—but then it suddenly shifts to this overhead shooter section, and later a weird maze-like stage. It’s janky, sure, but there’s something charming about how it just throws everything at the wall. The map was huge for an NES game, too. Not gonna lie, it’s rough around the edges, but if you’re into retro oddities, it’s a fun time capsule.
