Breath of Fire on SNES is one of those RPGs that just feels classic—like digging up a well-loved book with dog-eared pages. You start as Ryu, a kid who can turn into a dragon (which, let’s be honest, never gets old), and right away you’re thrown into this weirdly cozy mix of villages, caves, and turn-based fights where positioning actually matters. The sprites are chunky in that perfect 16-bit way, and the music? Still slaps.
What I love is how it doesn’t hold your hand. You’ll stumble into battles where you realize too late that your healer’s in the wrong row, or get lost in some dungeon because the map’s all twisty. But that’s part of the charm—figuring out which party members click together (Nina’s magic is busted if you keep her alive long enough) and slowly uncovering Ryu’s dragon transformations. It’s grindy in spots, but in that satisfying "one more level" way. If you’ve got a soft spot for old-school RPGs with heart, this one’s a time capsule worth cracking open.
