About Blue Marlin
Blue Marlin came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, published by Hot-B. It was part of that wave of NES sports and simulation games that tried to capture a specific real world activity, in this case the methodical challenge of big game fishing. You don't see many games about reeling in giant fish, so it always stood out on the shelf.
You control an angler whose main goal is to win a fishing tournament by catching the heaviest marlin. The gameplay splits into two distinct phases. First, you pilot your boat on a trolling screen, watching for fish shadows and trying to get a bite. Once you hook one, the perspective shifts to a side view from the back of the boat for the fight. This is where the real game is; you manage your line tension carefully, reeling when the fish is tired but letting it run when it struggles, or your line will snap. Your character has attributes like strength and vitality that drain during the fight, adding a resource management layer to the physical tug of war. It's a slow, tense game where a single mistake can cost you a catch you've been fighting for minutes. The whole process feels like a genuine test of patience and control.
