Blades of Steel on Game Boy is one of those old-school hockey games that somehow nails the chaos of the sport without overcomplicating things. You pick your team—I always went for the red guys—and then it’s straight into the action. No fancy menus, no drawn-out tutorials, just a face-off and suddenly you’re scrambling to steal the puck.
The controls are simple: pass, shoot, and body-check the heck out of anyone in your way. The fighting mechanic is ridiculous in the best way—if you bump into an opponent enough times, the ref just lets you duke it out. Whoever wins gets a power play, which feels way more satisfying than it should.
It’s not deep by today’s standards, but the speed keeps it fun. The AI isn’t shy about stealing the puck right back, so you’ve gotta stay on your toes. And that chiptune crowd noise when you score? Pure nostalgia. If you’ve got a Game Boy and even a passing interest in hockey, this one’s a no-brainer.
