Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, a time when the console was full of fighting games trying to stand out. Midway Games, known for pushing hardware with violent arcade titles, published this one. It was their attempt to bring a specific kind of brutal, futuristic combat to the home system.

You control a heavily modified fighter, a bio-engineered freak, in one-on-one battles. The main goal is to deplete your opponent's health bar or knock them out of the arena. Two mechanics define the action: you can shoot a projectile weapon from a distance and also perform a double jump, which opens up the vertical space. The pacing is fast and the difficulty is steep, with the computer opponents reading your moves aggressively. It feels like a chaotic scramble where you are constantly managing distance and looking for an opening to land a brutal combo.
