Aretha III is one of those obscure Game Boy JRPGs that never made it outside Japan, which is a shame because it's got this weird charm to it. You start off as this girl named Aretha (obviously) who gets pulled into some fantasy world—standard '90s RPG stuff, but the pixel art has this dreamy quality to it, like everything's slightly washed out in pastels.
Combat's turn-based, but with a twist: you can swap party members mid-battle, which actually makes fights way more tactical than they first seem. I remember getting wrecked by the first boss until I realized I could cycle in my healer at just the right moment. The music's surprisingly good too—lots of soft synth melodies that somehow don’t get annoying after hours of grinding.
If you're into retro JRPGs with a bit of jank, this one's a neat little time capsule. Just don’t expect a fan translation to hold your hand.
