World Cup Soccer on the Genesis is one of those old-school sports games that somehow still holds up. The pixelated players move with this weirdly satisfying chunky animation, and the controls are simple enough that you can pull off slide tackles and headers without memorizing a bunch of combos. It’s got that classic arcade feel—matches are fast, the crowd noise is hilariously exaggerated, and the refs might as well not exist.
I remember playing this as a kid and being weirdly obsessed with the penalty shootouts. The tension when the goalie starts shuffling side to side is ridiculous for a 16-bit game. Also, the international teams are all here, though some of the names are… creatively spelled. You’ll know what I mean when you see "Brasil" lining up against "Deutschland."
If you’re into retro sports games, this one’s a solid time capsule from when soccer sims were more about fun than realism. Just don’t expect FIFA-level tactics.
