Warlock on the Genesis is one of those weird little action-RPG hybrids that somehow works. You start off with this basic fireball spell and immediately get thrown into a dark fantasy world where everything wants to kill you - skeletons, floating eyes, the usual suspects.
The magic system is what makes it interesting though. You collect these spell orbs that let you mix and match different elemental attacks. I remember wasting like ten minutes just experimenting with combos before even leaving the first area. Ice + fire makes a steam blast? Sure, why not.
It's got that classic "tough but fair" Genesis difficulty - you'll die a lot at first figuring out enemy patterns, but the checkpoints are merciful. The pixel art holds up surprisingly well too, especially some of the boss designs. That three-headed dragon still gives me nightmares.
If you're into obscure 16-bit fantasy games with janky charm, this one's worth digging up.
