Ever stumble across a weird, forgotten Genesis game from Brazil? That’s basically Turma da Monica na Terra dos Monstros—a side-scroller based on a popular Brazilian comic. You play as one of the Monica’s Gang kids (think Mônica, Cebolinha, etc.) running through monster-filled levels that look like they were pulled straight from a kid’s sketchbook.
The controls are stiff in that classic early-90s way, and some of the platforming feels unfair, but there’s charm in the bizarre enemy designs and the fact that someone actually localized this for the Genesis. The music’s got that tinny, catchy Sega sound, too. Not a hidden gem, but definitely a curiosity if you’re into regional oddities.
Fun fact: You can tell it’s a Brazilian game because the dialogue’s all in Portuguese, even in the ROM floating around online.
