Top Gear Rally 2 on the Game Boy Color is one of those racers that punches way above its weight. The first thing you’ll notice is how smooth it feels—somehow they squeezed proper 3D-ish graphics onto that tiny cartridge. You’ve got a handful of cars to pick from (the rally buggy handles like it’s on ice, in the best way), and tracks that actually have elevation changes, which was wild for a GBC game.
What really sticks with me is the career mode where you earn cash to upgrade your ride. Messing with gear ratios and turbo settings makes a noticeable difference, and wiping out on the last lap because you got greedy with upgrades? Yeah, that’ll happen. It’s got that perfect balance of arcade fun and just enough realism to keep you tweaking your setup between races.
Still holds up if you’re into retro racers—just don’t expect Forza-level detail on a two-inch screen.
