Top Gear Pocket 2 is one of those Game Boy Color racers that somehow feels faster than it has any right to. The tracks are tight, the drifting is just slippery enough to keep you on your toes, and that little GBC speaker actually pumps out a decent engine growl. First race in, you’ll probably wipe out on a hairpin turn—I definitely did—but after a few laps, you start nailing those drifts like a pro.
What’s cool is how much they packed into this tiny cart. You’ve got different car classes, upgrades that actually change how your ride handles, and tracks that go from city streets to mountain passes. The AI isn’t just rubber-banding either—if you pull ahead, they stay behind unless you screw up. Feels surprisingly fair for a 90s handheld racer.
It’s not perfect (good luck seeing some of those night-time tracks on an original GBC screen), but for quick bursts of racing, it still holds up way better than most of its peers. Just don’t blame me when you get obsessed with shaving half a second off your lap times.
