Man, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater on Game Boy Color is way more fun than it has any right to be. The controls are surprisingly tight for a handheld port—you can still pull off kickflips, grinds, and even manuals if you time it right. The levels are scaled-down versions of the console classics, but they’ve got that same chaotic energy, especially when you’re trying to chain combos before the timer runs out.
Picking Tony or one of the other pros feels like a no-brainer at first, but then you realize each skater’s stats actually matter when you’re trying to nail those high-score runs. The Warehouse level is still the perfect place to practice, though I spent way too much time bailing off the halfpipe before getting the hang of it. And yeah, the soundtrack’s missing (RIP), but the pixelated skatepark vibes make up for it.
It’s one of those games where you swear you’ll just play for five minutes, and suddenly you’re grinding benches in Downtown for the twentieth time.
