Starflight on the Sega Genesis is one of those games that feels way ahead of its time. You start off with a rickety little starship, barely enough fuel to get anywhere, and this massive galaxy just waiting to be explored. The first time I played, I got lost almost immediately—ended up stranded on some barren rock with no way back. Lesson learned: always check your fuel gauge.

What’s cool is how open it is. You can mine planets for resources, trade with weird alien races (some are friendly, others… not so much), or just dive into deep-space dogfights. The lore’s surprisingly rich too—every planet has its own quirks, and piecing together the bigger mystery actually feels rewarding. Just don’t expect hand-holding. Half the fun is figuring things out the hard way.

It’s janky by today’s standards, but there’s something special about how ambitious it was for 1986. If you’re into old-school sci-fi with real teeth, this one’s still worth firing up.
