About Sqoon
Sqoon came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, developed by Irem. It was part of that wave of early NES games where developers were experimenting with different genres, trying to see what would work on the new hardware. You don't hear about it as much as some other titles from that year, but it had its own particular style.
You pilot a pink submarine, also called Sqoon, on a mission to destroy alien forces and rescue human survivors they've captured. Your main tools are standard missiles for attacking enemy creatures and a special ice ball bomb used to destroy alien facilities, which releases the trapped humans. Once you've collected nine survivors, you must ferry them to a safe island; doing so rewards you with power-ups and a full fuel tank. The fuel timer is a constant pressure, draining every sixty seconds and costing you a life if it runs out. This creates a tense rhythm where you are always managing your attacks, your rescues, and the clock. Playing it feels like a frantic race against depletion.
