Okay, so SD Gundam Gaiden: Lacroan is one of those Game Boy hidden gems where you get to pilot these chibi-style Gundams—way cuter than you’d expect for giant robots. The first thing that hits you is the pixel art; it’s got that classic Gundam look but shrunk down into these tiny, surprisingly detailed sprites.
Gameplay’s a mix of turn-based strategy and RPG elements. You’re moving your squad across grid maps, picking fights with enemy mobile suits, and leveling up your crew. Early on, you’re juggling between upgrading your Gundams or recruiting new ones—I wasted way too much time agonizing over that choice. The missions start simple, but before long, you’re dealing with ambushes and terrain that actually matters.
Story’s your typical Gundam fare—war, betrayals, dramatic monologues—but it works. And yeah, the difficulty spikes are real. One minute you’re cruising, the next you’re reloading a save because some boss just wrecked your whole team. Still, there’s something satisfying about finally cracking a tough mission after a few tries.
If you’re into retro mecha games, this one’s worth dusting off the Game Boy for.
