Risky Woods is one of those Genesis platformers that looks way prettier than it has any right to be—lush jungles, creepy temples, all that good 16-bit atmosphere. You play as this warrior dude armed with a sword and some magic, jumping between floating platforms while weird monsters pop out of the ground. The first level tricks you into thinking it's easy, then suddenly you're getting swarmed by fire-breathing... things.
What I like is how the weapons change up the gameplay. You start with this basic sword slash, but then you find magic orbs that turn your attack into fireballs or lightning. Boss fights are total bullet hell sometimes, especially that floating skull in the temple that shoots lasers everywhere. And yeah, the music slaps—that jungle theme still gets stuck in my head.
It's not perfect—some jumps feel just slightly off, and the hit detection can be brutal—but there's something charming about how hard it goes on the fantasy aesthetic. If you dig old-school platformers with a bit of jank, this one's worth a look.
