About Pocket Smash Out (europe) (unl)
Pocket Smash Out is a European Game Boy Color title from 2000, an unlicensed release that appeared late in the handheld's life. It was developed by an outfit called Pocket Sized Games, a name that fit the platform's focus on portable, pick-up-and-play experiences. This was a time when the Game Boy Color library was vast and varied, filled with many small-scale projects trying to carve out a niche.
You control a small, blocky character tasked with clearing each single-screen level of all its destructible bricks. Your main tool is a paddle at the bottom of the screen, which you slide left and right to bounce a ball upward. The core loop involves ricocheting the ball to break the brick formations while ensuring it never slips past your paddle. Some bricks take multiple hits to destroy, and power-ups occasionally drop, granting effects like a wider paddle or a multi-ball. The game starts simply but the pace quickens as levels introduce more complex brick patterns and faster ball physics. It feels like a condensed, frantic test of your reflexes and angles.
