Mystic Quest Legend (or Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest in the US) is that weird little SNES RPG that feels like Final Fantasy Lite. It was basically made to ease new players into turn-based combat—so yeah, it’s super simple compared to other JRPGs at the time. You’ve got your basic sword swings, magic spells, and some light puzzle-solving in dungeons, but don’t expect deep character builds or convoluted plots.
What’s cool though? The music absolutely slaps—some of those battle tracks go harder than they needed to. And the weapon system is kinda neat—you switch between axes, bombs, and claws depending on the enemy. Just don’t go in expecting FFVI levels of storytelling. It’s more like a Saturday morning cartoon version of an RPG.
Fun fact: This was Square’s attempt to hook Western gamers who found traditional JRPGs too intimidating. Whether it worked… well, let’s just say it’s got a cult following now.
