About Montezuma's Return
Montezuma's Return came out for the Game Boy in 1998, developed by Teque London. It was part of that wave of late-era Game Boy titles that tried to squeeze more complex adventures out of the handheld's limited hardware. You don't hear about it much now, but it was a solid attempt at bringing a particular style of action-puzzle game to a pocket-sized screen.
You control an explorer navigating a series of ancient, trap-filled chambers. Your goal is to find the key in each single-screen room and reach the exit, all while avoiding spikes, crumbling floors, and other environmental hazards. The game relies heavily on careful jumping and timing; you often have to trigger switches to open paths or freeze enemies in place. Combat is minimal, with the focus instead on navigating the rooms themselves. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes slow, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you misjudge a jump. Playing it feels like solving a series of small, dangerous puzzles with your reflexes.
