Montezuma’s Return is one of those Game Boy platformers that feels like it’s actively trying to kill you—in a good way. You’re jumping over spike pits, dodging rolling boulders, and figuring out how to outmaneuver these weird little enemies that pop out of nowhere. The controls are tight, but some of those jumps? Brutal. I remember replaying the same section like five times before nailing it.
The whole thing has this weirdly charming retro aesthetic—blocky, but in a way that makes the traps and secrets stand out. And yeah, there’s treasure hunting, but mostly it’s about surviving long enough to reach the next checkpoint. If you’ve got a soft spot for punishing-but-fair platformers, this one’s a solid time capsule from the Game Boy days.
