Mito Koumon - Sekai Manyuu Ki is one of those weird, charming NES games that never left Japan. You play as a wandering magistrate (basically a samurai detective) traveling the world to solve crimes—except everything’s got that classic 8-bit absurdity. One minute you’re interrogating villagers in pixelated Edo-period Japan, the next you’re somehow in Egypt talking to a guy who looks like a mummy.
The gameplay’s a mix of light RPG elements and adventure puzzles—lots of talking to NPCs, picking dialogue options, and occasionally getting into turn-based battles. The translation barrier makes it extra cryptic (good luck figuring out some clues without a guide), but there’s something fun about stumbling through it. The music’s got that nostalgic NES jingle quality too.
Definitely a niche pick, but if you’re into retro oddities or just want to see where weird NES games went, it’s a trip. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand.
