About Makai Toushi Saga
Makai Toushi SaGa came out for the Game Boy in 1989 from Square, the same company that made the early Final Fantasy games. It was one of the first real role playing games on that little gray brick of a handheld, a time when you were lucky to get a deep adventure without a backlight. You could tell they were trying to fit a big console style world into your pocket.
You control a lone hero exploring a world screen by screen, fighting monsters in turn based battles to grow stronger. Your main goal is to climb a massive tower and defeat the evil Minion who rules it. The game is famous for its weapon durability; your sword or bow can break mid fight, forcing you to improvise. There are no experience points; your stats randomly increase after combat, which makes every fight a small gamble. It is a difficult, unpredictable journey where planning only gets you so far. Playing it feels like charting an unknown map where your own luck is the final boss.
