Makai Toushi SaGa (or "Final Fantasy Legend" if you played the US version) is one of those Game Boy RPGs that feels way bigger than it has any right to be. You start by picking a hero—human, mutant, or monster—and each choice completely changes how you build your party. I went mutant first time and immediately regretted it when my dude started randomly losing stats after battles. Classic SaGa nonsense.
The combat’s simple but weirdly tense since your weapons break after a few uses, and monster allies evolve by eating meat mid-battle. The pixel art’s charmingly janky, especially when your party climbs a giant tower to heaven or fights a demonic slot machine. It’s rough around the edges, but there’s something about the way it throws bizarre ideas at you that sticks with you. Just maybe pack extra AA batteries.
