Lufia: The Legend Returns is one of those Game Boy Color RPGs that somehow squeezes way more depth into its tiny cartridge than you’d expect. You start off with this ragtag group of heroes—classic JRPG stuff—but the battle system’s got a twist: you arrange your party in a 3x3 grid, and positioning actually matters. Mess up your formation, and suddenly your healer’s getting wrecked by AoE attacks.
The dungeons are full of those tile puzzles the series is known for, and yeah, some of them will make you stop and stare at the screen for a solid minute. Graphics are surprisingly vibrant for a GBC title, and the music? Absolute bangers, especially the battle theme. It’s got that old-school Lufia charm, but don’t go in expecting a direct sequel—it does its own thing.
If you’re into turn-based RPGs with a bit of strategy and a lot of dungeon crawling, this one’s a solid time capsule from 2001.
