About Heiankyo Alien
I picked up Heiankyo Alien for the Game Boy around 1990, a port by Deniam of a much older arcade game. It was one of those simple, puzzling titles that filled the early handheld library, a game about digging holes more than fighting monsters. You don't hear much about it now, but it had a quiet, methodical charm that stood apart from the action-heavy platformers of the time.
You control a lone guard patrolling a grid-like map of ancient Kyoto. Your only tool is a shovel, and your goal is to trap the skittering aliens that emerge from the ground. The process is deliberate: you dig a hole, lure an alien over it, and then quickly fill the hole to bury them. The challenge comes from the aliens' increasing numbers and speed, forcing you to plan your routes carefully to avoid being cornered. Each screen is a self-contained puzzle, and the pacing is tense rather than frantic. It feels like a careful, strategic dance against a creeping tide.
