About Head On
I first played Head On on the original Game Boy, a cartridge with a zero on the label that always made me curious. It was released by Sega, which felt a bit unusual for a Nintendo handheld. This was during that early period where you had a lot of simple, direct action games designed for quick sessions on the monochrome screen. It fit right in with that no frills, pick up and play mentality.
You control a small car, and your only goal is to drive around a single screen maze, collecting all the dots while avoiding the other cars. The core mechanic is that you can only turn at intersections, which forces you to plan your route carefully. The other cars follow set patterns, but they get faster and more numerous as you clear levels. The game is quite fast and becomes difficult quickly, demanding sharp reflexes and memorization of the enemy paths. It feels like a tense, high stakes game of chicken every time you enter a new stage.
