About Ganbaruga
Ganbaruga came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by Atelier Double. It was part of that early wave of portable action games, a time when developers were figuring out how to make complex adventures work on a small, monochrome screen. You don't hear much about it now, but it had a certain ambition for its hardware.
You control a young warrior exploring a large, interconnected world screen by screen. Your main goal is to venture through dungeons, defeat bosses, and collect the scattered pieces of a sacred statue to restore peace. The game mixes sword combat with a unique grappling hook; you use it to pull enemies closer or to swing across gaps. Progression is methodical, as you often need specific items found in one area to unlock the next, and the difficulty can be unforgiving with limited continues. Playing Ganbaruga feels like a careful, deliberate puzzle where every new screen demands a quick assessment of your tools and the threats ahead.
