About Front Mission
I first played Front Mission on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1995, a game developed and published by Square. It arrived late in the SNES lifecycle, a time when developers were really pushing the hardware with complex, strategic titles. This one stood out for its grounded, political war story set in a near future dominated by massive, piloted robots called wanzers.
You control a squad of these wanzers, customizing each unit's arms, legs, and weapons before sending them into grid based, turn based battles. Your main objective is to complete mission goals, which usually involve destroying all enemy units or protecting a specific target. A signature mechanic is the ability to target and destroy individual enemy parts; blowing off an arm disarms them, while destroying legs cripples their movement. Between missions, you spend time in a hub screen managing your squad, buying new parts, and piloting your wanzers through linear, non combat areas to advance the story. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be punishing if you don't think several moves ahead. It feels like commanding a chess game where every piece is a heavily armed machine you built yourself.
