Fighting Masters is one of those early Genesis fighters that feels a little rough around the edges now, but there's something charming about it. You pick from these bulky, exaggerated characters—some look like they wandered in from a fantasy RPG, others are just dudes in karate gi—and then it's straight into stiff, slow punches and awkward jumps. The backgrounds are weirdly detailed for a 1991 fighter, though, with these elaborate castle and dungeon stages.
It's definitely not Street Fighter, but I kinda love how janky some of the special moves are. Half the time you're just mashing buttons hoping your guy will actually do the fireball motion you input. Play it more for the nostalgia than the mechanics. Still, there's a weird satisfaction in landing one of those clunky combos.
