About Family Trainer - Meiro Daisakusen (japan)
Family Trainer: Meiro Daisakusen came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, published by Bandai. It was one of the games designed for the Family Trainer mat, that big plastic pad you put on the floor. This was during that experimental phase on the NES where developers were trying out all sorts of unusual controllers.
You control a character exploring a series of maze-like screens. Your main goal is to find the exit in each stage while avoiding enemies and traps. You move by running in place on the mat's buttons, which makes your on-screen character walk. The signature mechanics are this physical control scheme and the screen-by-screen exploration of the mazes, where you have to remember layouts and often backtrack. The pacing is deliberate, and it can be quite challenging to coordinate your feet with the action on screen. It feels like a peculiar, physical puzzle box you are trying to solve with your whole body.
