European Club Soccer on the Genesis is one of those early soccer games that somehow nails the chaotic energy of the sport despite the chunky pixels. You pick from a handful of European clubs (no real names, but you can guess who’s who), and the matches feel fast and scrappy—lots of sliding tackles and wild shots from midfield. The controls are simple—pass, shoot, sprint—but the ball physics have that unpredictable arcade bounce where a clearance might accidentally turn into a 40-yard screamer.
It’s not the deepest soccer sim, but there’s something satisfying about how frantic it gets when you’re down a goal in the second half. The crowd noise is just a looped chant, and the players look like little more than colored dots from a distance, but it’s weirdly immersive once you get into it. If you’ve ever played Sensible Soccer or Kick Off, this sits somewhere between those—clunky but full of charm. Just don’t expect fancy tactics or accurate rosters.
Still holds up if you’re in the mood for no-nonsense, early-’90s soccer chaos.
