About Earthworm Jim
Earthworm Jim came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994, developed by Shiny Entertainment. It was part of that wave of games that felt like they were pushing what the console could do, with big, detailed sprites and a sense of humor that stood out. You weren't saving a princess or exploring a fantasy world; you were an earthworm in a super suit, which immediately set a different tone.
You control Jim, navigating through levels screen by screen, shooting aliens and bizarre creatures with your plasma blaster. The main goal is to rescue Princess What's-Her-Name from the evil Queen Pulsating, Bloated, Festering, Sweaty, Pus-filled, Malformed, Slug-for-a-Butt. A couple of his signature moves are using his own head as a whip to swing across gaps and as a grappling hook to pull himself to certain points. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike suddenly, especially in the underwater sections or the infamous "Intestinal Distress" level. It feels chaotic and unpredictable, but pulling off a tricky jump or clearing a screen of enemies is genuinely satisfying.
