Dokidoki Densetsu - Mahoujin Guruguru is one of those weird, charming little Game Boy Color RPGs that never made it outside Japan. You play as a kid wizard-in-training who has to draw magic circles on the screen to cast spells—kinda like a mix between an action game and a turn-based RPG. The art’s super colorful, and the whole thing has this goofy, almost parody-like vibe.
At first, I thought the spell-drawing mechanic would be gimmicky, but it actually works way better than you’d expect. Mess up the circle, though, and your spell fizzles—which is equal parts hilarious and frustrating when you’re in the middle of a fight. The dungeons are short and sweet, and there’s this weirdly satisfying rhythm to exploring, drawing spells, and battling monsters that look like they escaped from a Saturday morning cartoon.
If you’re into obscure retro RPGs with personality, this one’s a hidden gem. Just don’t expect a deep story—it’s all about the silly vibes and that oddly addictive spellcasting.
