Dig Dug on NES is one of those classic arcade ports that somehow feels even better with a controller in hand. You play as this little guy with a pump, tunneling through dirt while dodging Pookas (those round, floating dudes) and Fygars (the fire-breathing dragons). The goal? Pop enemies by either harpooning them and inflating them like balloons, or—my personal favorite—luring them under rocks and watching them get squashed.
At first, I kept getting cornered by Fygars because I didn’t realize you could pump them from the side for extra points. And those veggies in the middle of the stage? Totally worth grabbing, but sometimes it’s a gamble—do you go for the points or play it safe? The deeper you dig, the weirder the enemy patterns get, and before long, you’re frantically trying to trap three enemies under one boulder just to survive.
Fun fact: This version never made it outside Japan until the Wii Virtual Console brought it over. If you’ve only played the arcade original, the NES port has its own weird charm.
