Daikaijuu Monogatari - The Miracle of the Zone II is one of those weird, charming Game Boy Color RPGs that never made it outside Japan. You start off with this kid who gets sucked into a parallel world full of kaiju—think Godzilla-style monsters, but way more colorful and sometimes downright goofy. The battles are turn-based, but with a twist: you can actually tame and collect these giant beasts to fight for you. First time I played, I spent way too long trying to recruit this dopey-looking turtle monster because, well, it had a cool shell.
The pixel art’s surprisingly detailed for a GBC game, especially when the bigger monsters fill half the screen during fights. There’s also this weirdly addictive fishing minigame that I definitely didn’t expect—caught a three-eyed eel thing at one point and immediately regretted it. If you’re into obscure retro JRPGs with a monster-collecting twist, this one’s a hidden gem. Just don’t expect the story to make much sense unless your Japanese is solid.
