About Carmageddon - Carpocalypse Now (usa, Europe) (en,fr,es,it)
I picked up Carmageddon: Carpocalypse Now for the Game Boy Color around 2000. It was published by Sales Curve Interactive, I think, and it was one of those late-era attempts to bring a big, chaotic driving game to a handheld that was more suited to simpler graphics. You knew what you were getting into; the screen was small, the colors were a bit muddy, but the idea of causing mayhem on the go was appealing.
You control a car in a series of city levels, and your main goal is to win races or take out all the other cars. The signature mechanics are the freedom to drive anywhere and the constant pressure to wreck opponents. You can use power-ups you find scattered around, like a repair kit for your own damage or a turbo boost for a quick burst of speed. The pacing is frantic because the other drivers are aggressive, and the physics are simple but unpredictable, making collisions feel impactful. Navigating the tight, top-down maps while avoiding obstacles and hunting down rivals makes for a tense, messy drive. It feels like a scrappy, condensed version of the car combat it tries to emulate.
