Captain Commando on SNES is one of those beat 'em ups that just feels right—like the arcade cabinet got shrunk down without losing any of its chaotic energy. You pick from four weirdos (a guy in a mech suit, a ninja baby, a mummy, and the captain himself) and immediately start punching through waves of neon thugs. The first level throws so many enemies at you that you’ll be mashing buttons just to stay alive, and honestly? It’s great.
What I love is how over-the-top it is—you’ll suplex cyborgs, ride hoverbikes while shooting lasers, and fight a literal giant in a junkyard. The co-op mode is where it shines, though. Grab a friend, pick mismatched characters (I always go for the baby because it’s ridiculous), and watch the screen fill with explosions and nonsense. Some of the boss fights feel cheap until you learn their patterns, but that’s part of the charm. It’s a messy, loud, and stupidly fun relic from when games didn’t take themselves too seriously.
If you’ve got a soft spot for janky 90s action, this one’s worth firing up.
