Battletoads is that weird, brutal NES game where you play as mutant toads punching aliens in the face—except it keeps switching genres on you every five minutes. One second you're brawling through waves of enemies, the next you're racing down a tunnel dodging instant-death walls, then suddenly you're rappelling down a pit while avoiding spikes. It's like the devs couldn't decide what kind of game they wanted, so they just threw in everything.
The Dark Queen kidnapped your toad buddies, and honestly? She did you a favor. This game is so punishingly hard that by level 3, you'll wish she'd taken you too. The co-op mode is especially cruel—one wrong move and you'll send your friend flying into a bottomless pit. But there's something weirdly satisfying about the way your toad's fist grows to the size of a watermelon when you land a punch.
Also, that pause screen music slaps way harder than it has any right to.
