Base Wars is one of those weird NES gems that makes you go, "Wait, baseball... but with killer robots?" Yeah, it’s exactly that. You pick from four robot types—cyborgs, tanks, flybots, or motorcycles—and while they all look the same from the waist up, their lower halves determine how they move. Tanks are slow but tough, flybots zip around, and motorcycles? Well, they’re just cool.
The twist? Every close call at a base turns into a straight-up duel. Safe or out? Settle it with swords, guns, or whatever weapon you’ve upgraded your bot with. And here’s the thing: losing a duel means your robot is gone for good. No respawns. You can actually win by wrecking three of the opponent’s bots before the ninth inning, which adds this brutal layer of strategy. Do you play it safe and go for runs, or go full demolition derby?
Oh, and getting hit by too many balls also destroys your robot. Because why not? It’s gloriously chaotic, and somehow, it works. If you’ve ever wanted baseball with more lasers and less sportsmanship, this is your game.
