Base Wars: Cyber Stadium Series came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, developed and published by Konami. It was a time when developers were experimenting with mixing genres, and this game stood out as a strange but interesting hybrid on the NES.

You control a team of four different robot types, like a tank or a flybot, each with a unique movement style. The main objective is to score more runs than your opponent in a standard baseball game, but the big twist happens on close plays. Instead of an umpire's call, the runner and fielder enter a one-on-one duel with weapons to fight for the base. As your team earns money from successful plays, you can upgrade your robots with swords or guns for these battles. The duels are brutal; losing one means that robot is permanently destroyed for the rest of the match. This introduces an alternate win condition, where you can also win by destroying three of your opponent's robots, adding a layer of constant risk to every inning. Playing it feels like a tense, high-stakes negotiation where a simple slide into second base can turn into a fatal melee.
