Atomic Runner (or Atomic Runner Chelnov if you're feeling fancy) is one of those weird, janky Genesis action games that somehow sticks with you. You play as Chelnov, a miner who got hit with a nuclear blast and now runs around blasting robots with his radioactive powers. The controls take a second to click—you can dash, double jump, and shoot in eight directions, but it feels a little stiff at first.
The levels throw these weird, blocky enemies at you while cheesy synth music blares in the background. Some of the boss fights are actually pretty creative, like this one where you're dodging giant floating heads while platforming over disappearing blocks. It's not perfect—the hit detection can be iffy, and later stages get brutal—but there's something charming about its rough edges. If you're into obscure 16-bit action games, it's worth a look.
Just don't expect a hidden gem—more like a weird little relic with some fun moments.
