Atomic Betty on the GBA is one of those early 2000s platformers that somehow nails the cartoon’s energy—Betty’s got her jetpack, her sass, and a whole galaxy of weirdo villains to blast through. The first level throws you right into it: dodging asteroids, zapping alien goons, and rescuing hostages who somehow always end up in the worst spots. The sprites are chunky and colorful, exactly how you’d want a GBA adaptation to look.
It’s not just nostalgia bait, either. The controls are tight, and some of those later levels get surprisingly mean with the platforming—I remember one ice planet section that took me way too many tries. If you grew up with the show, you’ll spot all the little references, but even if you didn’t, it’s a solid space romp with just the right amount of chaos. Betty’s blaster upgrades make replaying earlier stages weirdly satisfying.
Also, that soundtrack? Pure early 2000s electro-cheese, and I mean that as a compliment. It’s the kind of game you play curled up on a road trip, pretending your GBA’s glow is a spaceship dashboard.
