About Arch Rivals - The Arcade Game (usa, Europe)
Arch Rivals came out on the Sega Genesis in 1992, a home port of Midway's earlier arcade game. It was a time when sports games were starting to get more complex, but this one stuck to a simpler, rowdier style of play.
You control one player on a two-on-two basketball team, with the goal of outscoring your opponents. The core mechanics are built around physical confrontation; you can punch opponents to stun them or steal the ball directly. There are no fouls called, so the matches quickly devolve into constant shoving and fistfights under the hoop. Winning requires you to be just as aggressive in fighting for possession as you are in shooting. It feels chaotic and deliberately unfair, which is exactly where the fun comes from.
