Yaka Sekaishi came out for the Game Boy in 1990 from publisher Irem. It was part of that early wave of action-adventure titles on the system, games that tried to pack a big world into a small cartridge. You don't hear much about it now, but it had its own ideas.

You control a young warrior exploring a cursed land. Your main goal is to find and assemble the scattered pieces of a legendary sword to defeat an ancient evil. The game is built on screen by screen exploration; each new area loads as you cross the border, and you'll slash at monsters with your basic blade, hunt for hidden passages, and tackle multi-floor dungeons. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes slow, as you backtrack through previously cleared screens to find a new path or item. It feels like a methodical puzzle box where every defeated enemy and opened door brings you one step closer to restoring order.
