Wurm: Journey to the Center of the Earth was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System, though I don't recall the developer offhand. It's one of those late-era NES games that tried to blend different genres, a side-scrolling shooter with some exploration elements.

You control Moby, a commander piloting a transforming vehicle called the Wurm. The main goal is to drill deep underground across 26 levels to find the source of the natural disasters wrecking the surface. The core mechanic is the Wurm's ability to change forms; it shifts between a drill tank for digging, a hovercraft for underwater sections, and a jet fighter for open areas. Each form has its own weapons and movement, and you're constantly switching to navigate the different environments and fight off enemies. The game is quite difficult, with tight spaces and aggressive foes that demand quick form changes. Playing it feels like a relentless push forward, constantly adapting to whatever the next screen throws at you.
