Tony Meola’s Sidekicks Soccer on SNES is one of those games that makes you wonder how they crammed so much into a cartridge. Right off the bat, you’ve got 64 teams—some real, some fictional—with their own play styles, so you’ll spend a solid five minutes just scrolling through them all before picking one. (I went with the New York side first, obviously.)
The Mode 7 graphics give the field this weirdly satisfying tilt as you move up and down, making passes feel way more dynamic than in other soccer games of the time. Slide tackles are reckless but fun, and pulling off a bicycle kick is pure luck half the time—but when it works, it’s glorious. Just don’t expect FIFA-level realism; this is arcade-style chaos with a keeper’s name slapped on it.
It’s not perfect—the AI can be a little predictable once you figure out its tricks—but for a mid-90s soccer fix, it holds up better than you’d think. If you’ve got a soft spot for retro sports games, this one’s worth a few matches.
